Jefferson County Public Works will hold an open house to present information about the upcoming Flucom Road Safety Project.
The open house will be from 3:30-6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the De Soto Rural Fire Protection District Administrative Office, 3200 Flucom Road, southeast of De Soto.
The construction project is expected to start in spring 2026 and finish by summer 2027.
Plans for the project call for improvements on a 1.7-mile stretch of Flucom Road from Athena School Road to Hencher Road, west of Hwy. 67 in Council District 6, according to a recent written statement from the county’s Public Works Department.
“The project will add 4-foot shoulders to give drivers an opportunity to regain control of their vehicle,” the report stated. “Center and edge line rumble strips will be placed after the shoulder addition is complete. Properly graded ditches, clearing of vegetation to improve sight distances and the addition of new enhanced fluorescent warning signs shall be implemented.”
The project is designed to make that stretch of road safer, the Public Works Department reported.
“Jefferson County is proposing the following safety improvements to reduce crashes on the selected section of Flucom Road,” the report said. “The aforementioned safety improvements will help alert and give drivers additional time to react if their vehicle leaves the driving lane.”
The road will remain open to traffic during construction, according to the Public Works Department.
Consulting engineering firm Horner & Shifrin of St. Louis estimated that the road improvements will cost $1,519,000, to be paid for by a federal grant, the report said.
The county has not yet hired a contractor for the project.
As the project progresses, more information will be provided on the Public Works website, jeffcomo.org/160/Projects.
