jcso 2 children dead 5-28-24

Investigators search a Mazda SUV that was driven this morning to Festus City Hall and Police Station on Tuesday morning by a woman who allegedly told officers she killed two of her children.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft of 200 feet of aluminum wire and a transformer left next to towers near Brethold Drive in unincorporated Fenton. The wire and transformer belong to Ameren, and together were valued at about $1,500, authorities reported.

An Ameren employee reported the theft at about 8 a.m. Feb. 28. He said the items were left next to separate towers at about 2:30 p.m. Feb. 25, the report said.

There were two large sections of wire next to one tower, and the transformer was next to a different tower. Neither the wire nor the transformer were secured because they were set to be installed, according to the report.

The wire was worth about $500, and the transformer was valued at about $1,000, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

As of March 2, the wire and transformer had not been recovered, and no suspects had been identified, spokesman Grant Bissell said. He asks anyone with information about the theft to call the Sheriff’s Office at 636-797-5515.
