Rock firefighters work to rescue a man trapped in a hole in Arnold.

Rock firefighters recently rescued an AT&T employee who became trapped in a muddy hole in Arnold. Edward Albrecht, 20, of Herculaneum was stuck in the hole for about two hours before he was freed, said Alyson Barton, spokeswoman for the Rock Community Fire Protection District.

Just before noon on March 27 Rock Fire got a call that Albrecht was trapped up to his knees in a hole outside a home in the 800 block of Beechwood Drive where he was performing telecommunication work near a trench that had been dug and become saturated following heavy rain in the area. Albrecht slipped and fell into the hole, and he sunk into the mud, Rock Fire reported.

Albrecht had been in the hole for about an hour before Rock firefighters were called to the home, and it took about an hour to free him from the hole. Firefighters used their hands and hand tools to dig him out of the hole and used a tripod system to lift him out of the hole, according to the report.

Albrecht had minor injuries and was transported by Rock Township Ambulance to Mercy Hospital South in south St. Louis County. He was treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.

Arnold Police also responded to the call and provided traffic control during the extrication, Barton said.
