This U-Haul van was destroyed by fire outside a home south of Festus.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a suspicious fire that destroyed a rental van. The fire happened Jan. 30 outside a home in the 12000 block of Hwy. CC. south of Festus, said Hematite Fire Chief Robert Hipes.

He said the Hematite Fire Protection District got a call at 1:20 p.m. about the fire. The 2014 GMC U-Haul van, which was unoccupied, was parked in a driveway.

“We didn’t find anybody around the vehicle,” Hipes said

The cause of the fire has not been determined, authorities said Thursday (Feb. 6).

“The vehicle was towed and the investigation is ongoing,” Sheriff’s Office spokesman Grant Bissell said.

“The contents of the vehicle were totally burned up,” Hematite Fire Lt. Patrick Seymour said. “We don’t know what was in the van in the first place.”

Seymour said firefighters were on the scene for about an hour.
