The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fire that started in the basement of a home at 6153 Beverly Court in the Hillsboro area on Sunday evening (Jan. 31).

The Cedar Hill Fire Protection District got a call about the fire at 5:40 p.m., and firefighters arrived on the scene at 5:48 p.m., Assistant Chief Greg Shuster said.

When they arrived on the scene, no flames or smoke were visible on the exterior of the ranch home, Shuster said.

“They went in, checked the basement, found smoke and a small fire and quickly extinguished it,” Shuster said.

One woman lived in the home, and Shuster said he believes she had both a cat and dog.

“Everyone made it out of the house safely,” he said.

The resident will not be able to return to the home right away.

“The house has to be cleaned up before it can be lived in,” Shuster said.

The American Red Cross arrived on the scene and was assisting the family, Shuster said.

The Goldman and Hillsboro fire protection districts, the Big River Ambulance District and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the call.
