Dittmer garage destroyed by fire

A fire in the 8300 block of Dittmer Ridge Road completely destroyed a detached garage.

A fire destroyed a detached garage in the 8300 block of Dittmer Ridge Road in Dittmer on Sunday, Oct. 6.

Assistant Fire Chief David Jones said the Cedar Hill Fire Protection District was called to the scene at 8:33 p.m. He said the 800-square-foot garage was fully engulfed in flames when his crews arrived.

No one was injured due to the fire, he said.

“The roof had already fallen in and there was a partial collapse of the front wall,” Jones said. “The fire was confined to just the garage.”

Jones said he believes two people live in a house on the property, which was unaffected by the fire. A man living at the property was rehabilitating the home and stored construction materials in the garage. Firewood was also stored inside the garage.

Jones said the man living on the property had a controlled burn near the garage earlier in the day.

“They came home and found the garage on fire,” Jones said. “He said he put (the controlled burn) out completely, but the garage door was left open while he was burning earlier in the day, and there’s a possibility something went in there. Nothing looks suspicious about it.”

Cedar Hill Fire put the fire out completely by 8:52 p.m.

St. Clair and High Ridge fire protection districts were also on the scene, along with the Big River Ambulance District.
