Festus Police are investigating thefts from multiple vehicles overnight between July 31 and Aug. 1 around town. Guns were among the items stolen from the vehicles, Festus Police Chief Tim Lewis said.
“The vehicle clottings were in Greenbriar and Ashford Place subdivisions, along old Hwy. CC and at all the hotels,” he said. “There were about a couple dozen incidents.”
Lewis said surveillance footage reportedly showed young men breaking windows in vehicles and opening unlocked ones and then stealing items from them.
He said the thieves targeted vehicles that had items left inside in plain view.
“We had three guns stolen out of vehicles,” he said. “All three guns were stolen out of vehicles in Greenbriar Subdivision.”
Lewis said the culprits worked quickly.
“They’d pull onto a lot next to a car, break-in and be gone in a minute,” he said. “That’s how fast they worked.”
Lewis advises people not to leave items of any value in their vehicles, especially guns.
As of Tuesday (Aug. 3), no arrests had been made and none of the stolen items had been recovered, he said. Anyone with information is urged to call the Festus Police at 636-937-3646.
