A man has been displaced from his in the 11000 block of Hwy. CC just south of Festus following a fire on Aug. 18. The man was not injured, Festus Fire Chief Jeff Broombaugh reported.
He said the Festus Fire Department got a call about the blaze around 8:25 a.m.
“There was one man in the house,” Broombaugh. “He got out safely before we got there. It’s a small single-story house.
“There was a small fire in the basement, but there was smoke throughout the house.”
Firefighters remained at the scene until shortly after 10 a.m., Broombaugh said.
He described the incident as “a small fire,” but added that while the fire did not cause extensive damage, the resident can’t return to the home until some repairs are completed.
“The fire never reached the first floor, but there’s electrical wiring that needs to be repaired,” Broombaugh said. “We had Ameren pull the meter because (firefighters) had to pull out wiring.”
The man said he would stay with family who live in the area, Broombaugh said.
He said an exact cause has not been determined.
“It could have been a lot of things. Electrical is most likely,” he said. “It doesn’t appear to be suspicious. The cause has just been left undetermined.”
Broombaugh said the Crystal City and Herculaneum fire departments and the Jefferson R-7, Hematite, Mapaville and Dunklin fire districts helped with the call, and the Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District responded to the scene.
