Commuters this morning, Oct. 26, passing by the Culver’s restaurant, 200 S. Truman Blvd., could not help noticing the large presence of emergency vehicles, but the incident turned out to be a small fire, authorities reported.

Crystal City Fire Chief Tony Bova said the department received a fire call about 9:20 a.m.

“It was a guy doing welding or soldering and a backflash that started a little fire,” Bova said. “(Workers) put it out before we got there. It was a minor incident.”

He said there were no injuries reported and he was not aware of any significant damage to the building.

“There really was no smoke,” he said.

Bova said a number of other firefighting entities responded to the call because it involved a business.

Because it is an establishment that sells food, his department had to contact the Jefferson County Health Department, he said.

“Any business that has food, you have to contact the Health Department,” he said. “We turned it over to them. It’s up to the Health Department when they can reopen.”

The Culver’s reopened sometime after 10:45 a.m.
