A body found floating in the Mississippi River on Monday morning, Feb. 16, south of Festus-Crystal City has been identified as 18-year-old Wuaniata Gibson, according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
The St. Louis County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman today, Feb. 18.
Gibson had been reported missing from St. Louis on Dec. 24 after she was last seen leaving her home in north St. Louis on Dec. 22. Barge workers discovered the body near River Cement Road at about 8:30 a.m. The Missouri State Highway Patrol recovered the body.
An investigation into the official cause of death remains underway, the St. Louis Police said in a written statement.
ORIGINAL STORY: A body found floating in the Mississippi River this morning, Feb. 16, south of the Festus-Crystal City area has not yet been identified, the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported.
Barge workers discovered the body in the water about 8:30 a.m. near River Cement Road in the southeastern part of Jefferson County, Sgt. Andy Gadberry of the patrol said.
He said it is the body of a woman, but no details about the body have been released.
“We do not know where the subject came from or how long they have been in the water,” Gadberry said.
He said the investigation is continuing.
