Allen Richard Chism, 38, has been accused of attacking his roommate in a home in the 700 block of Oakland Manor Drive south of Festus.
The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on June 20 charged Chism with second-degree assault, a class D felony punishable by up to seven years in prison; and armed criminal action, an unclassified felony that carries a penalty of three to 15 years in prison, court records show.
Chism was arrested on July 2, and as of Monday, July 14, he was being held on $10,000 surety-bond at the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro, court documents said.
Chism on May 22 approached the other man in the home’s kitchen with a black rope, and he allegedly wrapped the rope around the other man’s neck. The other man told investigators he was able to put his right hand between the rope and his neck to breathe, according to the case’s probable-cause statements.
Chism allegedly told Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies, “I assaulted my roommate.” He also said the rope he used was in the living room, which is where a deputy recovered the rope, the report said.
The Sheriff’s Office did not report a reason why Chism allegedly attacked the other man.
