The Pevely Board of Aldermen has awarded a $489,535 contract to R&K Excavation of Bloomsdale to complete stormwater improvements in two subdivisions.
Board members voted 6-1 Feb. 3 to approve the contract. Ward 4 Alderman William Brooks cast the only no vote, and Ward 2 Alderman Rick Yount was absent from the meeting.
R&K Excavation submitted the lowest of nine bids for the project, which will include improvements on St. Benedict Drive, Christina Drive and Yorkshire Place, all streets in the Tiara at the Abbey subdivision, as well as streets in The Vinyards subdivision.
The city used Cochran Engineering to review the bids, and the board went with Cochran’s recommendation to hire R&K Excavation.
Ward 1 Alderman Steve Markus said those projects comprise Phase 1 of planned stormwater improvements around the city.
“The developers of Tiara at the Abbey didn’t put in stormwater pipes when they were building,” he said. “That’s why we’re starting in that area. We will be doing stormwater projects around town.”
City Administrator Andy Hixson said the Phase 1 work should begin in the spring.
The Phase 2 stormwater work is targeted for St. Maur, Eagle Crest, Jackson Way and Sunridge Trail.
“We will bid those out once Phase 1 is done,” Hixson said.
Brooks said he is not against the stormwater improvement projects, but felt he needed more information, such as the planned sequence of the work, before he could vote for it.
Also at the Feb. 3 meeting, Mayor Stephanie Haas said she feels the board should return to holding two meetings a month, like it did in the past. The board switched to one meeting a month in September 2024 and has held only one regular meeting on the first Monday of the month since then.
Ward 2 Alderman Ryan Tucker said the board has not been holding regular work sessions and suggested having a work session along with a regular meeting each month. No decision was announced during the meeting.
