Crews will close Central Avenue in Festus under the northbound I-55 bridge starting at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, and the section of the road will continue to be closed through 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, for bridge demolition, MoDOT announced in a written statement.

According to the statement, traffic on northbound I-55 has been shifted onto a new bridge over Central Avenue, allowing for demolition of the old northbound structure. All lanes of I-55 will remain open.

All work is weather permitting. Signage will be posted for all detours, the statement said.

The demolition of the northbound bridge over Central Avenue follows the demolition of two northbound I-55 bridges (over Hwy. 67 and Festus North Third Street) completed earlier this month, agency officials said.

For additional information about current and upcoming detours and project status, visit the I-55 Corridor Improvement project at modot.org.

The purpose of the overall project is to address traffic and safety concerns along the I-55 corridor and account for future development and growth patterns in the region, according to the MoDOT website.

The bridge work is part of an estimated $246 million I-55 Corridor Improvements project that runs from just north of Pevely to just south of Festus.
