The public is invited to take part in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb to be held at 9 a.m. today (Sept. 11) at Jefferson College’s Arnold campus, at 1687 Missouri State Road behind the complex that houses the Arnold Recreation Center and Arnold Library.

Both the college and the Rock Community Fire Protection District are sponsoring the stair climb, which is being held to pay tribute to the 343 New York City firefighters who died in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Participants will try to go up and down the stairs at the college until they reach the equivalent of the 110 stories of stairs in the World Trade Center, said Roger Barrentine, the college’s director of marketing and public relations.

“The tribute not only honors the sacrifice of each of the firefighters who lost their lives, but also tells the world that we will never forget,” the college said in a written statement.

Rock Community firefighters are expected to participate in the stair climb, which is not a timed event.

There is no fee to participate, but donations will be accepted to benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
