Jefferson College officials have agreed to spend nearly $900,000 on two construction projects at its Hillsboro campus.
For one of the projects, an addition will be built at the new veterinary technology building, which opened Jan. 20. The other project calls for renovations to space inside the Career & Technical Education building, which the college’s Workforce Employee Services program will use. That space previously housed the veterinary technology program.
The college’s Board of Trustees voted 5-0 Feb. 13 to award both construction contracts to Brockmiller Construction of Farmington. Trustee Retta Tuggle was absent from the meeting.
A $458,900 contract was awarded for the addition, which is called Phase II of the veterinary technology building project. Brockmiller submitted the lowest of seven bids for that work.
In addition, Brockmiller was awarded a $431,400 contract for the renovation project at the CTE building. The company submitted the lowest of eight bids for that project.
John Linhorst, the college’s vice president, said the work for both projects is starting this month.
“The CTE building renovation work is expected to be ready for the start of school in August,” he said.
Linhorst said the vet tech building Phase II project will add 1,400 square feet l to the 5,775-foot-square-foot building. Brockmiller also was hired for Phase I of the vet tech project, constructing that building for $3,022,000.
“(The addition) is a single, large lecture and classroom space for the program,” he said.
Linhorst said college officials and students appreciate the new vet tech building.
“We are happy with Phase I,” he said. “Our veterinary technology program moved in and is enjoying the new space.”
The renovation of 2,972 square feet in the CTE building for the Workforce Employee Services will provide that program with improved facilities, Linhorst said.
“The Workforce Employee Services department provides a variety of customized training for our partners, as well as employment services for Jefferson College students,” he said. “So, this renovation will provide dedicated Workforce Employment Services department features. Some of the features will include conference space and a business incubator – that’s space for technology and consultation with Workforce Employee Services.
“It also will include two classrooms for customized training. There will be a new accessible entrance on the lower level of the CTE building.”
