A portion of Hunning Road will close May 15 to allow construction crews to add shoulders and soften a sharp curve in the road. The road is scheduled to reopen on Aug. 4, according to a written statement from the Jefferson County Public Works Department.
A 1,056-foot section of the road will be closed from Elizabeth Lane to just north of Industrial Acres Drive. Detour signs will be installed along Hunning Road advising motorists how to avoid the closure.
The project calls for the addition of a 4-foot shoulder on each side of the section of Hunning Road to be improved. In addition, new warning signs and guardrails will be installed where needed. A box culvert will be replaced, and one particularly sharp curve will be realigned, according to the Public Works Department.
PCX Construction in Arnold will be paid $875,578 to complete the road improvements, with 80 percent, or $700,462.40, of the cost to be covered by a federal grant and the remaining 20 percent, or $175,115.60, to be paid with part of the county’s share of revenue from a 1/2-cent sales tax for road and bridge improvements.
According to a 2017 traffic study, the most recent one completed in the area, the road has an average of 412 daily travelers.
