An eighth-grade English teacher and an HVAC technician have been named the Hillsboro R-3 School District’s 2025-2026 Teacher and Support Staff Person of the Year.
Ashley McNail, the eighth-grade teacher, and Justin Lawson, the HVAC technician, are both Hillsboro High School graduates. McNail graduated in 2015; Lawson graduated in 1999.
Lawson has been with the district for more than 15 years. McNail began her tenure five years ago with the district as a second-grade teacher for one year at Hillsboro Elementary before making her way to the junior high.
Associate Superintendent Melissa Hildebrand said McNail’s classroom is a place where students’ curiosities are nurtured and challenged to grow.
“As a junior high English teacher, she brings a passion for both teaching and learning, constantly refining her craft to meet the needs of her students,” Hildebrand said. “What truly sets her apart is her commitment to student success, she goes above and beyond to ensure each student feels supported, capable and inspired.
“Our district is better because of her dedication and heart for kids.”
McNail said she was both surprised and honored to get the award.
“Especially only being with the district for five years,” she said. “I don’t see it as just a reflection of me but of the environment that I’m so lucky to be a part of. I’m surrounded by educators who inspire me, support me and help me grow every day. And so much of what I do is shaped by them.”
McNail said teaching eighth grade English was her dream job.
“I think there’s something really special about introducing students to different books and genres. I always tell my kids, ‘Books are a way to see different perspectives and walk in the shoes of different people,’ and then I feel really passionately about writing and helping students find their voice and helping them become better writers in general. ELA is something that you’re going to need for any job,” she said.
McNail also said she was drawn to middle school education because of her own experiences as an adolescent.
“I think middle school is probably one of the most influential grades, (students are) going through so many changes. I know that’s a hard time for a lot of kids, anytime you ask anybody about middle school, usually it’s a rough time. It’s nice to be their constant and make them feel seen and safe and loved.”
Lawson said he is grateful for the award.
“The only thing I can say is somebody noticed, somebody took the time to pay attention to what I’ve been doing, how I’ve dedicated myself to saving money for the district and keep it functional and efficient as much as possible.”
Lawson also said the award is a testament to how hard the entire maintenance department works.
Assistant Superintendent Clay LaRue said this year marks the first time a member of the maintenance department has won Support Staff Person of the Year.
“Justin was nominated because he’s an exceptional employee, worker, role model for our maintenance team and for the district. His work ensures that our students and staff have safe, comfortable environments in which to learn and work each day. Even when systems are operating properly, the work is constant — servicing equipment, changing filters, adding refrigerants, maintaining kitchen appliances and responding to daily needs across the district.”
LaRue also said Lawson played an integral role in the high school’s $8.7 million HVAC system replacement project.
“His expertise and attention to detail have been invaluable throughout this process,” LaRue added.
Patrick Quinn, the district’s spokesperson, said Lawson teaches electrician courses at Jefferson College outside of his working hours.
