Herculaneum Alderman Milton resigns

A Herculaneum alderman has resigned from her seat after just one year on the board.

Krystle Milton, Ward 1 alderman, submitted a resignation letter to Herculaneum Mayor Ryan Wright, on June 16.

The Herculaneum Board of Aldermen accepted her resignation unanimously at its July 6 meeting.

Milton said her resignation was due to a change in life circumstances which would interfere with her ability to attend some board meetings.

“Life kind of happened, and it needs my full attention at this point,” Milton said. “I did enjoy my time on the board, and it was a very hard thing that I had to really think about because I feel like I’m letting my residents down. But at the same time, the residents need somebody that can fully be there for them.”

Milton said she hopes to be able to serve the city again one day in the future.

“I still am rooting for the city to continue to grow and prosper. The aldermen are great, and the mayor’s doing a good job,” she said.

Wright said he appreciates the help that Milton was able to provide on the board.

Wright said he is responsible for nominating a replacement when an alderman resigns before the end of his or her term. The nomination would then require majority approval by the board.

“The main thing was trying to find somebody that I know is respectable that the entire board would vote for and put in there. Because even though this is my appointment, it’s not solely my decision. It does have to be confirmed by the board,” Wright said.

To make his decision on who to nominate, Wright said he had a conversation with Ward 1 Alderman Dennis Tesreau to brainstorm who would be a good replacement for Milton.

He said long-time Herculaneum resident Sam Shelton, who has recently retired from ownership of Alarm Services of Jefferson County, was a good fit for the city.

“Sam’s been very involved in the community for a long time. He brings a lot of knowledge of finance and business, and he’s really good at working with people. He’s been a friend of the city for a very long time,” Wright said. “I think he’s going to bring something to the table. He’s a wise man.”

Wright said he reached out to Shelton, who said he would be honored to serve out the remainder of the term until April 2027, when the seat will be up for re-election.

Wright said he will be nominating Shelton for the board’s approval at the July 20 meeting.
