During the week of Aug. 30, the Jefferson County Health Department inspected 31 food establishments. Scores ranged from 78-100.
The inspection scores for the week of Aug. 30 are listed below. They are all routine inspections unless otherwise noted. Facilities considered low priority are not assigned a score. A low-priority facility does not prepare food.
■ 8 Ball Pool, 4545 Gravois Village Center, High Ridge, scored 93 on Sept. 1. Violations: soiled knives; soiled hood, fire suppression system and floor fan; and heavily damaged floor tiles.
■ Antonia Elementary, 3901 Old Hwy. M, Imperial, scored 100 on Sept. 3.
■ Arbor View Nursing and Rehab Center, 6400 The Cedars Court, Cedar Hill, scored 90 on Sept. 4. Violations: dented can; soiled can opener blade; burned-out bulb in hood system; and loose vent in ceiling.
■ Arnold 14 Cine, 1912 Richardson Road, Arnold, was reinspected on Sept. 2. No score given.
■ Burger King, 802 Lee Ave., Festus, scored 100 on Sept. 1.
■ Casa Charro, 100 S. Truman Blvd., Crystal City, scored 89 on Aug. 31. Violations: no staff on site with manager food safety certification; gap in door; bag of beans stored on floor; wiping cloth stored on prep table; scoop handles in ice bins/no handles on seasoning scoops; single-serve items stored on floor; splash guard in disrepair; soiled ice machine baffle; and chipped kitchen floor.
■ Case and Bucks Restaurant, 7095 Metropolitan Blvd., Barnhart, scored 90 on Sept. 1. Violations: black residue on bar soda gun/biofilm growth on food contact surface/soiled can opener blade; no sanitizer in cleaning solution; metal pans stacked wet; torn gaskets; dust buildup on window fan and fan guard; and excessive extra equipment/water on floor/water-stained ceiling tiles/food items stored in basement.
■ Cave Coffee, 11533B Gamel Cemetery Road, Festus, was inspected on Sept. 2. No score given due to low priority.
■ Cedar Hill MotoMart, 8489 Local Hillsboro Road, Cedar Hill, scored 97 on Sept. 1. Violations: no cover on tea; creamer dispenser tubing cut incorrectly; and ice buildup in walk-in freezer.
■ Character Kids Club, 3901 Old Hwy. M, Imperial, was inspected on Sept. 3. No score given due to low priority.
■ Character Kids Club, 4525 E. Four Ridge Road, Imperial, was inspected on Sept. 3. No score given due to low priority.
■ China King, 229 Arnold Crossroads Center, Arnold, scored 79 on Sept. 3. Violations: dented can; soiled can opener blade and dishes; no sanitizer in dish sink; door not self-closing; chicken container stored on cooler floor/food containers stored on top of uncovered food/fried noodles stored in cardboard box/uncovered containers of food; container of fried noodles stored near automatic scent sprayers; wooden bowl stored on top of uncovered chicken; dishes stacked wet; cooler racks in disrepair; and soiled prep top cooler, drying racks, shelf and soiled carboard on shelves.
■ Clyde Hamrick Elementary, 4525 E. Four Ridge Road, Imperial, scored 100 on Sept. 3.
■ Country Cafe, 2561 Hwy. 67, Festus, scored 93 on Sept. 2. Violations: dirty knife; multiple flies; dead spider on floor/dead cockroach on floor near mop storage/dead insects in light guards in restroom; no lids on breading mix; and soiled floor under fryers.
■ Crown Hospitality/Hampton Inn & Suites, 1331 Shapiro Drive, Festus, scored 100 on Aug. 31.
■ Crystal City Elementary, 600 Mississippi Ave., Crystal City, scored 100 on Sept. 1.
■ Crystal City High School, 1100 Mississippi Ave., Crystal City, scored 99 on Sept. 1. Violation: cracked lid on sugar container.

■ De Soto Farmers Market kitchen, 520 N. Main St., De Soto, scored 99 on Aug. 31. Violation: soiled gaskets.
■ Dylan’s Sports Bar and Grill, 675 Jeffco Blvd., Arnold, scored 90 on Sept. 1. Violations: dead insects in light guards in storage room; spatula in disrepair; gaskets not fitting; colored knives that can flake; soiled gaskets/mold-like substance in soda gun holder/drain; and hole in wall.
■ Fazoli’s, 123 Arnold Crossroad Center, Arnold, scored 89 on Sept. 3. Violations: personal items being stored with food products; steam from pasta kettles drifting toward clean dishes; cracked handle on butter brush; damaged back wall of walk-in cooler; soiled wall and ice machine lid/mold-like substance in soda machine drain trays; leaking hot water handle; and broken flooring in walk-in freezer.

■ Ridgewood Middle School, 1401 Ridgewood School Road, scored 99 on Sept. 4. Violation: soiled gaskets.
■ Schnuck’s deli, 1253 Water Tower Plaza, Arnold, scored 94 on Sept. 2. Violations: incorrect sanitizer solution in dish sink.
■ Sherwood Elementary, 1769 Missouri State Road, Arnold, scored 93 on Sept. 4. Violations: incorrect sanitizer solution; and kitchen restroom door propped open.
■ Soreli’s Italian Restaurant, 7044 Hwy. BB, Cedar Hill, scored 93 on Sept. 2. Violations: cups stacked wet; burnt-out light bulb; and damaged coving and missing parts of drywall.
■ Steak N Shake, 999 Veterans Blvd., Festus, scored 78 on Sept. 1. Violations: no staff with food safety certification; cheese and bacon stored at incorrect temperature; soda line on floor/boxes of food stored on floor in walk-in freezer; open glove box stored under soap dispenser/trash can stored directly under paper towel dispenser; ice buildup in cool well and cooler not holding proper temperature/steam table leaking water onto floor; no caulking behind dish sink; calcium buildup in dishwasher; soiled ice scoop holder and freezers; dumpster lids open; grout missing; water-stained ceiling tile/missing ceiling vent; soiled floors and walls/mold-like substance on three ceiling vents/dusty ceiling and walls; and soiled hood filters.
■ Woodridge Middle School, 2109 Gravois Road, High Ridge, scored 96 on Sept. 3. Violations: soiled can opener blade; and ice buildup in walk-in freezer/missing light socket cover.

How establishments are scored
According to the Jefferson County Health Department, facilities start with a score of 100, and points are reduced based on observed violations:
■ Six points are deducted for priority violations that directly contribute to foodborne illness risk.
■ Three points are deducted for priority foundation violations that indirectly contribute to foodborne illness risk or enable priority violations.
■ One point for core violations related to general sanitation and good retail practices.
■ Two points for repeat violations of any type.
Dan Kane, environmental supervisor for the Health Department, said the agency does not have ranges for good or bad scores but instead looks at the overall score, adding that readers need to look at the types of violations.
He said a couple of priority violations are more concerning than several core violations.
In certain cases, the Health Department returns to a food establishment to reinspect, allowing time for the facility to correct issues. According to the Health Department, reinspection is not solely based on the score an establishment gets; it’s determined by the type of violation. Priority and priority foundation violations need to be corrected within a certain amount of time, and priority violations typically are corrected on the day of the inspection before the inspector leaves.
Kane said the department rarely closes a food establishment, and most temporary closures involve a power outage, fire or sewage backup.
