The Festus Tourism Commission heard pitches for more than $292,000 in grant requests at a Monday afternoon meeting at Festus City Hall.

The five-member commission will reconvene Monday, May 18, at City Hall to discuss the requests and award grants. Commission members are chair Pat Parsons, Rhonda Gerstner, Jeff Adams, Michelle Hohmeier and Mike Cage.

Gerstner did not attend the meeting.

Prior to the grant request pitches, Andy Held spoke on behalf of Jefferson County Growth Association about its 11th Annual Bottleneck Bridge Ride to tell the commission that the JCGA will from now on put on the event by itself, no longer partnering with the Trailnet organization. This change will allow JCGA to move the event from August to Oct. 10 to coincide with the Main & Mill StreetFest.

“It opened up for us to not be stuck in one calendar, which was putting us in August, which is, you know, hot as the surface of the sun,” he said. “Last year, it was especially.”

He said he was there to explain the changes in the event, not to request a change to a $12,700 grant the commission awarded for the event in November 2025.

“As far as Tourism funds, we’re not asking for anything more or anything less,” he said.

The following are the grant request amounts and those who submitted the requests. All those listed below attended the pitch meeting and made presentations to the commission, except the representative for Get Healthy De Soto.

The grants work on a reimbursement system, so if a group awarded a grant does not use any or all of the funds designated by the commission, the remaining amount remains with the commission.

The commission funds its grants with revenue from a 5 percent hotel-motel tax charged when people stay at the city’s hotels or motels. Vaughn reported that the tax generated $367,551.55 in 2025.
