The Eureka Fire Protection District found no signs of fire after staff members smelled smoke at Most Sacred Heart Catholic School early this morning, Jan. 11, Deputy Chief William Stamberger said.
Eureka Fire was called to the school, 350 E. Fourth St., at 7:46 a.m., and students and staff were evacuated from the building as firefighters searched for the cause of the odor. An outside transformer was found covered in soot, but there were no signs of a fire and no smoke coming from the transformer, Stamberger said.
He said the transformer was still working and the school had power.
After searching the building, firefighters allowed students and staff to resume classes at about 8:15 a.m., Stamberger said.
He said Eureka Fire contacted Ameren to inspect the transformer.
