Arnold and Pevely residents voted out their incumbent mayors in today’s election, with Arnold Mayor Ron Counts losing a five-way race, and Pevely Mayor Stephanie Haas losing her reelection bid. Hillsboro Mayor Buddy Russell overwhelmingly defeated his challenger to retain his seat.
In Arnold, where residents were angry about the now-abandoned Arnold Parkway Road project, they not only voted out Counts, but also they swept out three City Council incumbents – Ward 1 Councilman Jason Fulbright, Ward 3 Councilman Mark Hood and Ward 4 Councilman Butch Cooley.
Current Ward 2 Councilman Bill Moritz won the race for mayor. Troy Blacksher won the Ward 1 Council seat, Tim Seidenstricker won the Ward 2 seat, Jessica Bess won in Ward 3 seat and Michael William Rethmeyer won the Ward 4 seat.
Most of the ballot measures did well today, with the Crystal City and Sunrise school districts, the city of Byrnes Mill and the Rock Community Fire Protection District seeing their ballot issues win approval. The Dunklin Fire Protection District saw one of the two measures it had on the ballot pass. The Cedar Hill Fire Protection District’s measure got more than 55 percent of the votes in favor, but it required a 4/7th majority, or 57.14 percent, vote for passage.
Just 14,131 of Jefferson County’s 162,288 registered voters cast ballots in today’s election, for an 8.7 percent voter turnout.
