Selma Village Sewer District officials are asking voters to approve a $2.5 million bond issue on the Aug. 4 ballot for operational upkeep and structural upgrades.
The measure requires a four-sevenths (57.14 percent) majority to pass. The district is located south of Festus.
The proposition language on the Aug. 4 sample ballot asks “Shall the Selma Village Sewer District of Jefferson County, Missouri issue its sewer revenue bonds in the principal amount of Two Million Five Hundred Thousand Dollars ($2,500,000) for the purpose of constructing, improving, extending and equipping the district’s sewerage system, the cost of operation and maintenance of said system and the principal of and interest on said bonds to be payable solely from the revenues derived by the district from the operation of its sewerage system, including all future extensions and improvements thereto?”
Todd Kilgore, the sewer district’s secretary-treasurer and a member of its governing board, said passage of the bond issue would not come with the tax increase, but rates could be affected if it does not pass.
“No tax,” Kilgore said in a written statement. “However, its passage will affect how sewer usage rates will be determined.”
He said passage of the bond issue is important to the well-being of the sewer district.
“Our community’s wastewater infrastructure requires continuous maintenance,” Kilgore said. “These funds will go directly toward operational upkeep and structural upgrades. This ensures our system remains in full compliance with environmental regulations, preventing costly regulatory fines and protecting our local water supply.”
He said he is not aware of any organized opposition to the measure.
