Pevely Mayor Stephanie M. Haas is facing challenger Steve Markus in the mayoral race on the April 8 ballot. The position is a four-year term and is paid $275 a month. Haas did not return a Leader survey.
Markus, 71, is a retired carpenter. He has a 12th grade education. He is married to Patricia.
What experience do you have (elected office, civic organizations, volunteer work, etc.) that might serve you well in this position?
Markus: 12 years as alderman. Member of Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors, Jefferson College Foundation, Jefferson County Tourism, Pevely Planning and Zoning, Pevely Tourism Board and Jefferson County Labor Club.
What are the biggest problems facing the city and how would you address them?
Markus: Police staffing – staffing with qualifications needed for the positions.
What would you do to quell the infighting among the elected officials and to address staffing shortages and other problems in the Police Department?
Markus: Election will take care of it. Problem in police is (all departments are hiring) and not enough to go around.
