Jefferson County voters will decide on several constitutional amendments and pick which local, state and federal candidates they’d like to represent them at the Aug. 4 primary election.
County Clerk Jeannie Goff, who is also the county’s election authority, said about 28 percent of Jefferson County voters turn out for midterm primaries.
“I’m hoping for a bigger turnout, but 28 percent is the average,” she said.
Jefferson County voters are required to vote at their assigned polling place. Polling places are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on election day, and voters are allowed to cast their ballots if they are in line at closing time.
In Festus, voters previously assigned to the Festus Performing Arts Center will now vote at Festus Elementary School, 1500 Midmeadow Lane.
Ameren will disconnect the electricity at the center beginning Aug. 3, and the disconnection will extend through Aug. 11, Goff said, meaning the building is unavailable as a polling place. The clerk’s office plans to mail a notice of a change in polling location to all voters assigned to the center and is also sending releases to local news outlets.
“If (voters) don’t get the information ahead of time, we’re going to have signs out there,” Goff said. “Obviously, we have to have electricity, and it’s summertime, so we have to have air conditioning for the workers and voters coming in to vote. So yeah, we’re going to do our best to get this done.”
