Base repair extends work on Lonedell Road

Crews are expected to finish paving Lonedell Road in Arnold near the start of July after a portion of the road is repaired. The road has been closed to northbound traffic since July 2025.

The Lonedell Road improvement project was nearing completion when a section of the road gave way, delaying paving by about two weeks, interim Arnold Public Works Director James Pogorzelski said.

Lonedell Road’s northbound lane has been closed since July 2025.

Pogorzelski said a soft spot was found just past West Highview Drive when crews were paving the road on June 17-18.

“They will have to dig it out and base it in before they can overlay it,” he said on June 18. “Trucks were falling through the pavement. We have to get the base repair taken care of.”

Pogorzelski said the crew will have to wait for utilities to be marked before the base repair work may begin. He said the base repair is expected to be completed this week and that the paving may be completed near the start of July.

Northbound traffic has been directed to take Pomme Road to Old Lemay Ferry Road during the partial closure as the 0.8-mile stretch of Lonedell Road has been worked on.

Arnold hired K.J. Unnerstall Construction Co. of Washington for the project.

In 2023, Arnold received a Surface Transportation Block Grant from the East-West Gateway Coordinating Council of Governments to help pay for the project.

City officials said the grant will cover $1,306,216 of the cost, and Arnold will pay the remaining $978,784.

The project included widening the lanes from 9 1/2 feet wide to 11 feet wide, resurfacing the roadway, putting in stormwater pipes and enclosing the open drainage ditches along the side of the road, installing curbing gutters with inlets to collect water to filter through the pipes to a nearby creek, building a 6-foot sidewalk on one side of the road, doing work on sharp hills on the road to lessen blind spots and posting signs reminding drivers to share the road with bicyclists.
