The city of Byrnes Mill is holding a public workshop March 18 on the regulation of its feral cat population.
The workshop is open to the public and will be held after the Board of Alderpersons meeting, which is set for 6:30 p.m. March 18 at Byrnes Mill City Hall, 141 Osage Executive Circle.
The Byrnes Mill Board of Alderpersons has long debated the topic of feral cats. City officials said a feral cat colony previously was spotted near Hood’s Discount Home Center, 4401 Hwy. 30.
Current city ordinances on feral animals were last updated in December 2012.
In November 2025, the city considered an ordinance to regulate the population of feral cats by requiring people who provide shelter, food and water to feral cat colonies to register with the city.
The ordinance would define the roles and responsibilities of those who offer food, water and shelter to feral cat colonies.
In December 2025, the city also proposed adopting a trap, neuter and return policy, which officials said would curb the feral cat population without taking extreme measures.
Mayor Rob Kiczenski previously said he hopes to have a vote on the ordinance by this year.
