Arnold rec center indoor pool to be temporarily closed for repairs next month

The Arnold Recreation Center’s indoor pool is expected to be closed from Feb. 17-21.

The Arnold Recreation Center’s indoor pool is expected to be closed from Feb. 17-21.

The Arnold Recreation Center’s indoor pool is scheduled to be closed for a week in February so repairs can be completed.

Parks and Recreation Department Director Dave Crutchley said the pool is set to be closed from Feb. 17-21 and reopen on Feb. 22.

The rec center is at 1695 Missouri State Road.

While the pool is closed, Crutchley said, laterals in two filters will be replaced, new grates will be installed in the bottom of the pool, valves will be replaced and new landing pads will be put down at the end of the slides. Crews will deep clean the pool.

Crutchley said the pool will be drained on Feb. 16 after the rec center closes.

He said the work should be completed in about three days, and the pool should be refilled on Feb. 20. Then, the pool will remain closed on Feb. 21 for the water to be heated.

“It should just be down Monday through Friday and reopen on Saturday,” Crutchley said. “This is keeping up with the maintenance of the pool.”

City Council members voted unanimously Jan. 16 to pay $15,900 to Midwest Pool and Court Co. of Maplewood to replace filter laterals in two sand filters.

Crutchley said the laterals, which are pipes in the filters, are broken, and sand is coming into the pool area.

“As the water comes in and goes through the sand to be cleaned, the laterals pick up the water and send it back into the pool. We are getting more and more sand in the pool.”

Crutchley said along with replacing the laterals, the sand will be removed from the filters. There will be new sand put back into the filters.

“That has never been done in 20 years,” he said.

Fitness center

The fitness center in the lower level of the rec center also will be closed later this year, Crutchley said.

New carpet will be installed in the area that has cardio equipment, like treadmills, stationary bicycles and rowing machines, and the rubber floor in the weight area will be extended by about 1 1/2 feet.

Council members voted unanimously Jan. 16 to pay Shaw Industries of Wentzville $25,923.21 to install the carpet and extend the rubber flooring. After the work is complete, new equipment will be moved into the fitness center, Crutchley said.

“We haven’t heard an official date for when the new exercise equipment will be delivered,” he said. “We don’t want too much down time for the customers. We are ordering the carpet, and when we get a date for the equipment, we can schedule the work.”

Crutchley said the carpet is approximately 12 to 13 years old and needs to be replaced because of its age.

“It is kind of getting worn,” he said.

Crutchley said it will likely take four to five days for the carpet to be replaced and one to two days to install the rubber flooring.

“(The carpet) is on concrete and glued down, so it will take a lot of work to get it up,” he said. “Some of the existing tile needs to be pulled, and they are carpeting all the way to the gym.

“The rubber flooring will be a picture frame around the existing flooring. We hope to have everything (closed) for less than a week.”

Crutchley said he hopes to close the area on a Monday and reopen it by that following Saturday.

“This is needed,” he said. “This gives it a fresh look. We are looking at some window tinting too. I think it will freshen up the area.”
