The filing period for those interested in running for public office in the April 8 general election opens Tuesday, Dec. 10, and ends Tuesday, Dec. 31.
In the April election, candidates will run for seats on boards that govern cities, school districts and fire, ambulance, water, sewer and road districts.
Jefferson College has two seats with six-year terms and one seat with a four-year term (to finish an unexpired term) up for election.
The Jefferson County Health Department and the Jefferson County 911 Dispatch agency have no board seats up for election in April.
Not all fire districts have open seats on the ballot each year, and in 2025 there will be no elections for the Antonia, Goldman, Rock Community, Dunklin, Cedar Hill and Jefferson R-7 fire protection districts.
The last day for governmental entities to place tax increase requests, bond issues and other measures on the ballot is Jan. 28.
The last day to register to vote in the election is March 12.
Typically, candidates file for open seats during regular business hours at the offices that serve the various governmental entities, although some candidates are asked to file at the Jefferson County Administration Center in Hillsboro.
Those who are interested in filing are advised to check for possible holiday closures, especially at school districts, which close for winter breaks. School districts will be required to be open for at least part of the day on Dec. 31, the last day of the filing period.
The following is a list of local officeholders whose terms expire in April. Incumbents – those who were elected to the seats they hold – are denoted with an (I). Those who were appointed to fill vacancies on boards are noted, as well as the names of those they replaced, when the information was available.
