Some races immediately emerged in the early days of the filing period for the April 8 election.
The filings opened Dec. 10 and end Dec. 31.
In Arnold, incumbent Mayor Ron Counts already has two challengers, and at the Northwest R-1 School District, five candidates already have thrown their hats in the ring for two open Board of Education seats.
The Jefferson College Board of Trustees has two seats for full six-year terms and one seat for the four years left of an unexpired term. Voters will choose three candidates to fill these seats, with the top two vote-getters winning the six-year terms and the person finishing third winning the four-year term.
On the first day of filing, retired Jefferson College director of public relations and marketing Roger Barrentine and retired Festus Police Chief Tim Lewis filed to run for seats on that board. Neither is an incumbent, but Lewis recently was appointed to fill the vacant seat until the April election.
The last day for governmental entities to place tax increase requests, bond issues and other measures on the ballot is Jan. 22, and the last day to register to vote in the election is March 12.
Typically, candidates file for open seats during regular business hours at the offices that serve the various governmental entities, although some candidates are asked to file at the Jefferson County Administration Center in Hillsboro.
Those who are interested in filing are advised to check for possible holiday closures, especially at school districts, which close for winter breaks. School districts will be required to be open for at least part of the day on Dec. 31, the last day of the filing period.
Not every entity will have seats on their boards or councils up for election on the April ballot, so they are not listed below.
The following is a list of candidates who have filed. Incumbents – those who were elected to their seats – are denoted with an (I).
Attempts were made to reach every city, school district, ambulance and fire district and other governmental entities in the Leader readership area for a list of candidates who had filed by Monday. Not every entity responded.
