The rain stayed away, and the annual Daylily Sale in Kimmswick sold out of its nearly 1,300 plants as expected.

Approximately 250 people attended Kimmswick’s 27th annual Daylily Sale on June 27 at Kimmswick resident Carrol Wrather’s state-inspected garden.

“The weather was truly in our favor; the rain stayed away,” said Pam Gormley, Kimmswick Visitor Center manager.

“We had people come before we even opened, and it continued until maybe noon; then we had a few (buyers) here and there until 4 p.m.”

Master Gardener Wrather, who turned 90 this year, started the annual sale to manage his vast garden and benefit the Kimmswick Visitor Center.

This year, the event raised $3,100.

“What Mr. Carrol would want others to know is that this is a true labor of love for him in supporting the visitor center and the community in general,” Gormley said.

“Also, there were generations from his family there, helping the day run smoothly and doing all the digging. Plus, there were many former employees of the visitor center there to lend a helping hand.

“Overall, he was very happy with the outcome of the day.”

As he makes it to his 91st birthday, Wrather is expecting the 28th annual Kimmswick Daylily Sale to have more of the same turnout from buyers and the same dedication to helping the visitor center from volunteers, as “consistency is accountability.”

Gormley shared some advice for future attendees, as the event always attracts a lot of people, both novice gardeners and experienced master gardeners.

“Come, look around, pick out what you want before and make a list/take a picture, take a number and then be ready for the diggers.”
