The Spotlight Community Theatre is producing a performance of “Steel Magnolias” on Nov. 9-12 at the Festus VFW, 900 VFW Drive, in Crystal City.

The Spotlight Community Theatre will put on a production of “Steel Magnolias” this month.

Performances will be at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 9-11, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at the Festus VFW, 900 VFW Drive, in Crystal City.

Tickets cost $15 and are still available for the Nov. 9-11 performances, but the Nov. 12 show was sold out as of Oct. 30, said Spotlight Community Theatre founder Courtney Wisely of Festus, who plays Truvy in the performances.

She said those who attend the show will find some humor among the drama.

“It is a heartbreaking drama that takes place in a beauty salon in Louisiana,” Wisely said. “But, I would say it’s a dramedy because it is also funny. It’s set in the 1980s.”

The plot involves a group of women who regularly gather over a period of several years at Truvy’s salon, where they discuss their lives as one character, Shelby, marries and decides to have a baby despite the health risk it poses for her.

“It’s about the lives of these women who all get together at a beauty shop every Saturday. One of the characters has diabetes. This plays into the plot,” Wisely said.

She said “Steel Magnolias” holds a special place in the hearts of many women.

“This is a beloved classic pretty much for every woman over the age of 30,” Wisely said.

The other lead actors are Samantha Roberson of Festus, who plays M’Lynn, and Natalie Way of St. Louis, who plays Shelby.

Other cast members include Lara Dane of Festus, Angi Ruble of Hillsboro and Kyli Wickenhauser of Imperial.

Debbie Anderson of Festus is the director, and Lucky Perry of Festus is the assistant director.

Wisely said younger children may find it hard to follow the show.

“It’s not vulgar or anything,” she said. “I’d say it’s for 13 and older in in order for them to understand.”
