Upcoming fundraising event to benefit local students in need

Kathy Apollo, left, and Terri Politte of Herculaneum Chapter 325 Eastern Star encourage people to attend a Rock and Roll Bingo fundraiser Aug. 30 at Festus-Crystal City Elks Lodge 1721.

The Eastern Star Chapter 325 of Herculaneum will hold a Rock and Roll Bingo fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 30, at Festus-Crystal City Lodge No. 1721, to benefit local families in need. The money raised at the new event will go to the Crystal City, Dunklin R-5, Festus, R-6, Hillsboro R-3 and Jefferson R-7 school districts and primarily will be used to cover the cost of lunches for students who need help.

However, districts may use their share of the proceeds to help students in other ways, event organizers said.

The bingo fundraiser runs from 6-10 p.m. at the lodge, 4 Elks Drive, in Crystal City. The cost to play is $30 per person or $200 per table of eight. Participants must be at least 18 years old. The ticket price includes soft drinks, beer and regular mixed drinks, with top shelf-alcohol available for purchase.

“Your own snacks are welcome, but no outside beverages are allowed,” and Terri Politte, past matron of the chapter and current treasurer.

She and Kathy Apollo, the Eastern Star chapter fundraising chair, said the funds raised at the event will be divided equally among the school districts.

“We were looking for something new to bring to the community,” Politte said. “We thought this would be a good opportunity.”

The event itself is a hybrid of Bingo and trivia, the women explained.

“It’s set up like a regular Bingo, but we’ll have a DJ play songs,” Apollo said. “You have to match the artist who sings the song with a space on your card. That’s the trivia part.”

Politte said players not only will need to know the name of the song, but also the artist.

“There are 10 games during the night. There is a winner each game,” she said.

The evening will offer a number of other activities, Politte said.

“In between games there will be other fun ways to win prizes,” she said. “We will have baskets for auction. There will be a 50-50 raffle and other raffles.”

Among the raffle prizes are two televisions and a patio set, Apollo said.

“There also will be a prize for best era costume,” she said. “We want people to dress up from their favorite era, from the ‘50s to current day. The best-decorated table also can win a prize.”

Tickets may be purchased at Eventbrite.com; a service fee will apply. Tickets also may be purchased at the door. For more information, call 314-650-3015 or 314-809-5498.

“We hope this will become an annual event,” Politte said.

Apollo said organizers changed the name of the event at some point, previously calling it Music Bingo.
