The Martin Luther King Jr. March held in Jefferson County is set to return for the first time in three years.

The march is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, in downtown Crystal City and Festus.

The 28th version of the event will start at Crystal City Hall, 130 Mississippi Ave., and proceed to Trinity Mt. Carmel Church of Jefferson County, 321 Adams St., in Festus.

The Giving Something Back to the Community (G.S.B.T.T.C.) organization sponsors the march.

“We usually form up around 1:45 p.m. or 1:50 p.m.,” said Denise Brown, a G.S.B.T.T.C. member and the march organizer.

She said the COVID-19 pandemic forced organizers to cancel the event in 2021 and 2022.

“It will be our first one since 2020,” she said. “We’ve had several people ask if we were bringing it back. We had to decide as a group and we decided to do it.”

Brown said a short program will be held after the march at Trinity Mt. Carmel Church. The program’s theme is “We all have dreams. Is yours to unite or divide?”

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday is Jan. 16.

“We want people to look at it as a day on, as opposed to a day off, to recognize what he stood for,” Brown said. “I just hope everybody comes out to support it.”

Hot chocolate, coffee and cookies will be served.
