The Jefferson College Friday Speaker Series will continue during the spring semester with presentations on Feb. 21, March 14 and April 11 in the Student Center’s Viking Room on the Hillsboro campus.

Admission for each session costs $10 and includes a buffet lunch with beverages and dessert.

Doors will open at 11 a.m. for each session, with lunch at 11:45 a.m. and the presentations at about 12:15 p.m. The presentations typically last 45 minutes.

The Jefferson College Foundation sponsors the series.

Laura Villmer, development specialist for the foundation, said anyone may attend. However, seating is limited.

“We allow 116 for the Viking Room. It usually sells out,” she said.

Listed below are the topics and the speakers scheduled for the series.

Feb. 21: “Jefferson County Recreational Treasures,” with speaker John Winkelman, a conservation advocate who writes a weekly Outdoor Outlook column for the Leader.

Winkelman will talk about the flora, fauna and public parks and outdoor activities in the region.

March 14: “The Buzz about Bees,” with speaker John Pashia, owner of JGR Pashia Apiaries.

Pashia, a third-generation beekeeper and former vice president of the Eastern Missouri Beekeepers Association, will discuss what beekeeping involves, the history of beekeeping in the U.S. and the importance of bees to humans.

April 11: “The Cherokee Princess Myth & Trail of Tears State Park,” with speaker Chris Otto, Jefferson College English professor. Otto will talk about the legend of Princess Otaki, known as “Cherokee royalty,” as well as Trail of Tears State Park near Cape Girardeau.
