The House Springs Lions Club will give away more than 3,000 tree saplings on Saturday, April 27, organizer Cyndi Carr said.
She said Lions Club and Cub Club members will set up a booth in the Price Chopper parking lot, 4639 Gravois Road, in House Springs, where they will give away the trees from 9 a.m. until all the trees are gone, which usually is about noon.
The members will give away dogwood, redbud and loblolly pine saplings provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation.
“They are native trees to Missouri, not the invasive ones but the ones that thrive here,” she said.
Carr said the Lions Club has organized a tree giveaway for the past couple of years and has seen a good turnout.
She said one of the Lions’ main global causes is the environment.
“These are beautiful trees, and there’s no cost to anyone,” Carr said. “We do this as a service to our community because it’s about making the world greener. What better way to make the environment better than to plant trees, especially trees native to your area?”
The event also allows current Lions to share information about joining the club, which meets on the second and third Wednesday of every month at various local restaurants.
The Cub Club, a youth branch of the Lions Club open to any children ages 4 to 12, began meeting last September, on the second Monday of every month at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Hill.
“We need to grow our membership,” Carr said. “I think a lot of our members are aging out because they’ve been members for 50, 60 years. We need younger Lions who want to give and support the community.”
According to the Lions Club International Foundation website, Lions Clubs organize service projects in vision care, youth education, environmental disaster relief and hunger.
For more information about how to join, Carr said to email her at lioncyndi5072@gmail.com.
