Hawks on Stage, the Hillsboro Intermediate School’s drama club, will be making its stage debut with a musical “’Twas’ the Night Before Christmas” based on the 1823 children’s poem of the same name.
Showtimes are 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 3-4, at the Hillsboro High School Theatre, 123 Leon Hall Parkway. Run time is one hour.
Amy Smith, a music teacher at Hillsboro Intermediate and club founder, said the show has two casts – the red cast and the green cast.
“We have so many kids that I did a double cast … just so I could as many of them an opportunity to perform,” she said.
The red cast will perform Dec. 3, and the green cast’s show is the following day.
Tickets cost $5 for adults and $3 for students. They may be purchased online at hillsborointermediate.ludus.com. Proceeds from ticket sales will support Hawks on Stage and future productions.
New club
Since its formation in September this year, Hawks on Stage has seen close to 80 fourth- through sixth-graders join its weekly after school meetings.
Smith said she wanted to start the club because she felt there was a lack of opportunities for students interested in theater.
“There’s just not a lot of opportunity here in the district; there’s a gap between fourth grade and high school for performance,” she said. “I wanted to bridge that gap.”
Smith said budget constraints led her to pick “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” as the club’s first production.
“I had to find something that was fairly affordable,” she said.
Smith also said students are learning all aspects of theater.
“Not just acting, but set production, costumes and collecting props,” she said. “The kids learn how to work together; they’re learning responsibility; they’re learning how to get along with each other and take direction. They’re learning a lot of valuable skills that can be used in everyday life.”
Smith said the club’s next production will be “12 Angry Kids,” which will be performed in May.
