This year’s Sundays at Sunset concert series in Festus will feature three bands new to the event, as well as an old favorite.
The free concerts series is scheduled to that start Sunday, Sept. 11, and be held every Sunday after that through Oct. 2, Festus officials announced.
The concerts will be from 6-8 p.m. at the bandstand at Sunset Park, 816 Park Drive. The city of Festus and the Festus Tourism Commission sponsor the concerts.
Sundays at Sunset is a popular event in the city, said Barb Lowry, the Festus recreation and tourism director.
“It’s a great time,” Lowry said. “People enjoy it. There are different types of music each week of the series, so there’s something for everybody.”
The following bands will perform during the series:
■ Sept. 11 – The MOBB (Missouri Big Band) featuring vocalist Joe Scalzitti will return for the first performance of this year’s series. “It’s big-band music,” Lowry said. “We love them and everybody loves them. A lot of years, they draw the biggest crowds (among shows in the series).” She said the band largely consists of Jefferson County residents.
■ Sept. 18 – Funky Butt Brass Band. “They play brass, funk and soul,” she said. “They’re from the St. Louis region. Their percussionist is Ron Sikes Jr., band director for Jefferson R-7 (School District).”
■ Sept. 25 – Trixie Delight. “It’s a group that plays a little bit of everything,” Lowry said. “It’s a St. Louis band.”
■ Oct. 2 – The Big Rigs. “That’s the last of the concerts,” she said. “The Big Rigs is a country band out of St. Louis.”
She said that while the Funky Butt Brass Band, Trixie Delight and The Big Rigs may have performed in the area before, each will be playing for the first time in the Sundays at Sunset series.
Those who attend the performances are advised to bring something to sit on and coolers are welcome at the events, Lowry said.
