About 80 walkers took part in the De Soto Goes Pink Walk on Oct. 14. A Gathering for a Cure festival takes place on Main Street this Saturday, Oct. 21.

The De Soto Goes Pink group will hold a Gathering for a Cure festival on Saturday, Oct. 21, to raise money for local women battling breast cancer.

The festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. along Main Street between Miller Street and Amvets Drive in De Soto.

Festivities will include music throughout the day near Main and Miller streets, organizer Linda Henry said.

Brook Haverstick will play acoustic music from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Bill Lucas will perform from 1-3 p.m. and Scott Minner will take the stage from 3-5 p.m.

The De Soto Goes Pink board will sell pork steak, brats, hamburgers and hot dogs.

Henry said a number of vendors, including Fyre Lake Winery in Cadet, will have booths at the event.

A car show will be held throughout the day, beginning at 9 a.m., near Amvets Drive. Children’s activities, including a bounce house and face-painting, also will be included.

Henry said a lot of the businesses on Main Street will take part in the festival.

This is the second year for the festival, she said.

“Hopefully we will have a good turnout so we can do some more good,” Henry said.

De Soto Goes Pink is a charitable organization that provides financial and emotional support to Jefferson County breast cancer patients.

She said De Soto Goes Pink does not have a long application process like larger organizations, and anyone who needs help may contact her to seek assistance with electric bills, medical insurance co-payments, hospital and doctor’s office visits and more. De Soto Goes Pink held its 12th annual fundraising walk on Oct. 14, drawing 80 participants, Henry said.

The number of walkers has dwindled since the COVID pandemic, but the turnout was not bad this year, she said.

For the past four years, the group also has held a fundraising trivia night, and the May trivia fundraiser drew a good turnout despite bad weather that day, Henry said.

She said the group will hold a Main Street collection day on Saturday, Oct. 28, when members will be out collecting money.

“We are just trying different things to raise money,” Henry said, adding that the number of people needing help has grown.
