Looking to get rid of old papers and gadgets?

The city of Byrnes Mill is holding an electronic recycling and document shredding drop-off event in partnership with Midwest Recycling Center from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 11, at Byrnes Mill City Hall, 141 Osage Executive Circle.

Paper and documents will be shredded for free. A fee will be charged to recycle some electronics.

The recycling fee will be: $30 for CRT TVs that are 26 inches and smaller; $50 for CRT TVs that are 27 inches and larger; $5 for a CRT monitor; $50 each for console, DLP or rear-projection TVs; and $20 each for LED, LCD or plasma TVs.

Any device containing freon will cost $10 each to recycle, while it costs $5 each for printers, copiers and MFPs.

City officials said those who want to recycle items that require a fee must pay in cash or by check.

Officials said shredding will not be done on site. They said the project is funded by the St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District.

Mayor Rob Kiczenski said the event is important because it gives residents and surrounding community members a place to safely destroy sensitive documents.

“Identity theft is something to take seriously, and discarding tax forms and bank statements in the trash is not a good thing to do and could cause severe financial damage if those documents were to end up in the wrong hands,” he said. “Additionally providing somewhere to take electronic items is good for the environment and helpful to the local community.”
