Byrnes Mill Police Special Olympics Car Show 2024

The Byrnes Mill Police Special Olympics Car Show will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at Spring Hills Presbyterian Church, 6247 Upper Byrnes Mill Road.

Car enthusiasts are invited to enter their hot rides in the fourth annual Byrnes Mill Police Special Olympics Car Show.

The show will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at Spring Hills Presbyterian Church, 6247 Upper Byrnes Mill Road.

It costs $20 to enter a vehicle in the show. People may register a vehicle in advance or on the day of the show.

It’s free to attend the show, which is open to the public.

Chief Frank T. Selvaggio said all proceeds from the show will support the Missouri Special Olympics program, which provides training and athletic competitions for people with disabilities.

“We have some Special Olympics athletes who live in our community,” Selvaggio said. “We feel it’s a very important part of not just our city and our community, but also the state to support this program. It’s one of the finest programs in the world.”

Sgt. Cody Umfress said he expects 40 to 50 cars in the show.

Company B BBQ in Byrnes Mill will serve free hot dogs, soda, water, and chips. Donations for the food and drinks are encouraged.

The event also will include raffles for items donated to the car show.

Umfress said he first got involved with the Special Olympics in 2011 when he took part in the Polar Plunge, an annual fundraising event that has groups race into a freezing lake.

Byrnes Mill Police took the plunge at Creve Coeur Lake in Maryland Heights on Feb. 24 and raised $2,190 for the Missouri Special Olympics.

Umfress said the car show is another way the Police Department supports the Special Olympics athletes.

“These athletes look at us as their protectors,” he said.

Selvaggio said the highlight of the car show is watching the athletes choose their favorite car for the best-in-show trophy.

“It’s never the $80,000, one-of-a-kind Camaro; it’s the brightest color car that has almost no value to other people,” he said. “The kids just like it and pick it, and it’s cool to watch.”

Other trophies will be awarded in the show, Selvaggio said.
