The Jefferson County Department of Parks and Recreation will hold its 10th annual Big River Run on Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Northwest Sports Complex, 4900 Byrnesville Road, in House Springs.

Recreation division manager Chelsea Wallis said runners and walkers have until Aug. 31 to pay the lower rate for the event’s two races – a 5K and a 10-mile run. Entry in the 5K costs $20 and for the 10-mile run $30. Participants will receive a T-shirt and will have the chance to earn a medal if they have the best time in their age group.

From Sept. 1-11, the cost of the races goes up by $5. Wallis said same-day registration is also available but a T-shirt is not guaranteed that day. The race begins at 8 a.m., and participants must register from 6:30-7:30 a.m.

Wallis said participants will be treated to fantastic views of the countryside as they race.

“There are beautiful farms and ranches out there,” she said.

Both races start and end at the sports complex, with runners and walkers following the Big River on Byrnesville Road.

Wallis said the weather is usually nice for the Big River Run.

“The first time we held it, there was a spot shower that opened up right above us, like 10 minutes after we started running,” she said. “It wasn’t anywhere in the forecast. We haven’t ever had rain except for that one time.”

Race packets may be picked up from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at the High Ridge Civic Center, 2800 Community Lane, or on the day of the race.

“The people who run it and who have been participants in the past, they’re just good people and they’re out there to help everybody,” Wallis said. “Everybody’s support and cheering on is just great.”
