Arnold Rotary Club Charity Car Show set for May 9

The Arnold Rotary Club will hold its second Charity Car Show on May 9.

The Arnold Rotary Club will hold its second Charity Car Show on May 9.

The Arnold Rotary Club will hold its second Charity Car Show from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 9 at the Fox C-6 Service Center, 849 Jeffco Blvd, in Arnold.

Car owners may pay $20 to pre-register for the show until April 15. The cost to enter the show is $25 after that, and car owners may register the day of the show.

Registration is scheduled from 7-11 a.m. May 9, and judging will begin at 11 a.m. Awards are scheduled to be announced at 2 p.m. The first 150 registered entrants receive a shirt and dash plaque.

If there is inclement weather on May 9, the show will be held at the same time and place on May 16.

Phil Hendrickson, Arnold Rotary president, said there were about 130 entrants in last year’s show, and approximately 500 people attended the event.

He said the club collected $8,000 from the show.

“The original date was rained out, and we had almost 50 who preregistered but were unable to make the makeup date,” Hendrickson said. “That was our first car show for the Rotary. For our first car show, it was a pretty good turnout.”

Hendrickson said he believes the car show will have more participants this year.

“I am thinking we will get around 200 (entrants),” he said. “During the Arnold Police Officers Association car show (at Arnold Days in September), I passed out 400 flyers for this. They said ‘Great, we can put it on our calendar now.’ I am hoping for a good turnout.”

Hendrickson said the money Arnold Rotary collects from the show is used to make contributions to area charitable organizations, such as the Arnold Police Officers Association, BackStoppers, Brenden’s Friday Backpacks, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Focus on Mission, Fox C-6 robotics program, Gateway Food Pantry, Hand ’n Hand Women’s Center, Pony Bird, Salvation Army and Scouting America.

Hendrickson also said money from the show helps pay for scholarships that Arnold Rotary awards to students from the Fox C-6 and Windsor C-1 school districts, for the club to participate in community events such as Christmas in the Park and for the organization to provide Christmas gifts to retirement community residents, deliver free Thanksgiving meals, hold the Arnold Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast and for veterans to participate in the Veterans Memorial Trip to Perryville.

“The more money that we get means we can put more money into the charities that we help support,” he said.

Those who enter the Charity Car Show may compete in 22 different classic vehicle categories, which includes competitions for trucks and motorcycles. There also are six specialty award categories for best wheels, paint job, interior, engine, survivor (which are for vehicles that have not been restored) and show.

Hendrickson said first- and second-place winners in the 22 categories will receive an award pendant and 20-ounce mug, and the “best of” winners also receive a pendant and mug.

“Most guys at car shows want to win, but they don’t want to take trophies home,” he said. “The mug will have the show’s logo. Last year, we had a lot of comments (about the mugs). They said, ‘We finally got something that we can use.’ It is something different than a trophy.”

Hendrickson said a DJ will play music throughout the event, and there will be drawings for attendance prizes. He said people must be at the show to collect an attendance prize.

Hendrickson also said food trucks from Del Taco and Bliss Mobile Bakery, Deli and Catering will sell food and drinks throughout the show.

“Del Taco was there last year, and those who had that loved it,” he said.
