Dogs to take dip in Arnold Rec Center outdoor pool on Sept. 6

Several dogs wait by the pool at the 2024 Pooch Plunge.

The Arnold Recreation Center’s outdoor pool will go to the dogs on Saturday, Sept. 6.

The annual Pooch Plunge will be the final day the outdoor pool will be open at the facility, 1695 Missouri State Road.

Dogs weighing less than 35 pounds will be allowed in the water from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and dogs weighing 35 pounds or more may swim from 1-3 p.m.

It costs $11 for a dog and one human to enter together, and each additional person costs $3. Humans and dogs may get into the water knee deep only.

“I love that we end the pool season with people bringing their furry friends,” said Ajsa Roach, Arnold Parks and Recreation Department deputy director. “I love that the outdoor pool serves the community through the summer and at the end, dogs are able to use it.”

Last year, approximately 75 dogs took a dip in the outdoor pool with about 25 dogs taking part in the session for dogs weighing less than 35 pounds and about 50 taking part in the session for dogs weighing more than 35 pounds. About 125 people were at last year’s event, the Parks and Recreation Department reported.

Roach said the Pooch Plunge is popular.

“It is one that people ask about,” she said. “Two years ago, we weren’t able to do the dog swim because we left the outdoor pool open longer because the indoor pool was closed for renovations. A lot of people were bummed when it didn’t happen that year.”

Roach said one of her favorite parts of the plunge is watching the smaller dogs.

“I think it is cute to watch the little dogs come in,” she said. “There is one family who comes every year, and their dog is wearing goggles and a whole little outfit. It is the cutest thing.”

Dogs must be vaccinated to participate in the event, and owners are responsible for their dog’s behavior and cleaning up after their dog. Food or treats are not allowed in the pool area.
