Dogs will again have the chance to splash around in the Arnold Recreation Center’s outdoor pool.
Last year the outdoor pool remained open longer than usual because the indoor pool was closed for renovations, so the Arnold Parks and Recreation Department did not hold the Pooch Plunge, which typically marks the end of the season.
“We are very excited to bring it back this year,” said Ajsa Hukic, deputy director for the city’s parks department. “We’re thrilled that our four-legged friends can enjoy the pool again. The Pooch Plunge is a fan favorite, and we know many in the community are delighted we are holding it this year.”
The Pooch Plunge is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7. Dogs weighing less than 35 pounds will be allowed in the water from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and dogs weighing 35 pounds or more may swim from 1-3 p.m.
The cost is $11 for a dog and one human to enter together, and the fee for each additional person is $3. Humans may get into the water knee deep only.
“I think the Pooch Plunge is going to be extremely fun for dog owners,” said organizer Dylan Toole, an Arnold parks department supervisor. “I think it is a very unique event. It is a very special event to get your dog out, meet other dog owners and enjoy the community engagement. This is one of those special things that brings a community together.”
Toole started working for the parks and rec department in July. He said he had been in the military and was stationed in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Va., as well as Colorado before working for the city of Arnold.
“It is very new to me,” said Toole, who grew up in the Chicagoland area. “I have never seen it before in any other place I have worked or lived. God willing, the weather is good and that will bring out a lot of people and their dogs.”
Toole said he is looking forward to seeing what the Pooch Plunge is like.
“I am a big dog person,” he said. “I am excited to see all kinds of dogs show up. I think it will be a fun, entertaining day. I think it is a fun activity to do before they drain the pool.”
