Jefferson County was created by "Act of Territory" December 8, 1818. Named in honor of Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), Jefferson County became a Charter form of Government in November 2008 by the voters. Jefferson County, located in the eastern part of the state, is the sixth most populous county in Missouri.
