A Starbucks coffee shop is coming to Festus, maybe as soon as this spring.
The Starbucks will be built at 1003 Gannon Road, where a Payless shoe store used to operate.
Dave Mangelsdorf, CEO of Home Service Oil Co., which is based in Barnhart, said today (Jan. 11) that he and his sister, Sandra Overberg, are developing the property for the Starbucks and will lease it to the national chain.
He said the lease agreement with Starbucks was finished this week.
Mangelsdorf said the building that housed the Payless store will be demolished and then a new building will be constructed for the Starbucks.
“It will be a complete tear down and rebuild,” he said. “It will be a brand new 2,000-square-foot Starbucks’ design.”
Mangelsdorf said the target is to open the new Starbucks this spring.
“I want to guess April or May, probably May,” he said. “All the planning is done. All that’s left is permitting and construction. As long as we have good weather, it should go pretty quick.”
Mangelsdorf said while he and Overberg will own the site, they will not have a hand in running the Starbucks, which will offer its famous coffee and other fare.
“It will be a Starbucks company operation,” he said. “Starbucks will run it. We will build it and lease it to the Starbucks company. We will own it. Home Service will not be involved.”
Mangelsdorf said he is not aware of Starbucks granting franchises other than, possibly, long ago.
He said his family has a similar arrangement with Dollar General stores in Hillsboro, Otto and Pomona (in southern Missouri).
“We own three Dollar General stores with kind of the same situation,” Mangelsdorf said.
He said the Starbucks company initiated the idea of Mangelsdorf developing a Starbucks in the Festus area.
“Starbucks felt it was a good site for a Starbucks,” Mangelsdorf said. “They contacted me. This probably took over two years to complete.
“I’m glad we’re at this point now. We’re looking forward to it.”
