Sherwoods Classic Eats has moved and switched up its menu from burgers and breakfast fare to a selection of pasta, pizza, salads and subs.
After operating for six years on Catlin Drive in Barnhart, the restaurant closed in late November and reopened at 122 N. Main St. in De Soto in early December.
Owner Tiffany Lindsey, 45, of Arnold said she wanted to buy a building for the restaurant, rather than continue leasing a spot. She has purchased the building on Main Street that most recently had housed an antique shop.
“We gutted everything,” she said. “We closed on (the building on) Aug. 14 and opened on Dec. 10.”
Lindsey believes the building was built in the 1920s and at one time had housed a tattoo shop and a jewelry store. She said the way the building is constructed, including its ceilings, restricted what she could do with the kitchen.
“I had to create a menu around the kitchen,” she said.
One thing Lindsey is excited to bring to Jefferson County is a deep-dish, pan pizza. It’s a rectangular pizza with Wisconsin brick cheese. She also offers a round, St. Louis-style, thin-crust pizza with a choice of mozzarella blend or Provel. She said the dough and sauce are homemade.
Lindsey said she loves TV, movies and music, which is reflected in the caricature-style drawings of famous actors and musicians hanging on the walls, as well as the names of menu items.
She said the restaurant’s most popular sandwich is the Mr. John Wayne, with roast beef, provolone, horseradish and au jus. The restaurant also offers Mr. Ghost and Mr. Chicken Salad, Finn’s Tuna Salad and Mrs. Cleavers Egg Salad sandwiches.
Lindsey said she uses homemade roast beef and turkey for the sandwiches, and the bread comes from Vitale’s Bakery on The Hill.
It also serves Homemade Mild Red Chili, Roasted Red Pepper Gouda Bisque and Smokehouse Loaded Potato Bacon Soup.
Lindey said a variety of appetizers are served, including the popular, 1-pound Jumbo Bavarian Pretzel – served with a trio of dips.
In addition, she just obtained a liquor license and will sell beer and wine, as well as pineapple, strawberry and blueberry wine slushies.
She said she suspects the menu will be tweaked as she sees what people like.
Lindsey said she has seen several of her previous customers come to the De Soto location to try out the new menu.
She said she has run restaurants in the St. Louis market for the last 25 years.
“I’m a cook at heart,” she said.
Lindsey said 10 employees moved with her from the Barnhart location, and she has hired another 10.
She said she likes being located along Main Street, where festivals and parades are held throughout the year.
Lindsey said she hopes to have a grand opening celebration at the end of February or the beginning of March. She wants to eventually hold weekly trivia nights at the restaurant, too.
