House Springs Price Chopper owner Trip Straub announced June 2 that the grocery store, at 4639 House Springs Center off Hwy. MM, will close Friday, June 27.
Straub, who has owned and operated the Price Chopper for 17 years, said the store has struggled financially for more than a decade.
“Increased sales during the COVID-19 pandemic helped us cover expenses temporarily, but, unfortunately, closing has become a necessary step due to continued financial challenges,” Straub said in a written statement. “Our hope is that another grocery operator will take over the space to continue serving the local community.”
Store representatives said in a June 2 Facebook post that the “current economic climate” has made it difficult for the store to remain open.
“This store has served the community for many years, and we’re deeply grateful for your support,” they said in the post.
The store has 25 employees, who may transfer to other Straub-owned grocery stores once the Price Chopper closes, store representatives said.
Founded in 1901, there are four Straub’s Markets in the St. Louis area, with the closest in Webster Groves. The other three stores are in Town and Country, the Central West End and Clayton.
Straub said that a 20 percent off storewide closing sale began on June 3 at the Price Chopper and will continue while supplies last. Customers may redeem their accrued loyalty points for cash discounts on items through June 27.
Additionally, store hours have been adjusted to 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, Straub said.
“We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the House Springs community and surrounding areas for their support and patronage over the past 17 years that we’ve owned the store,” he said. “It’s been a privilege to serve this area.”
