Thelma Fortney, 99, of Herculaneum died July 11, 2019, in Cleburne, Texas. The high-energy Mrs. Fortney worked for the U.S. Department of Defense until her retirement in 1974. She moved to Texas to be near her brother’s family when she gave up driving in 2015. She loved her hometowns of Herculaneum and Festus, where she was born in a boardinghouse on March 4, 1920, the daughter of the late Anna Whitt Becker and George P. Becker. She was preceded in death by her husband: John Fortney, whom she married in 1946.
She is survived by a niece: Debbie (Charles) Becker Sullivan of Nemo, Texas; a nephew: Bob (Cathy) Becker of Stephenville, Texas; several great- and great-great nieces and nephews; and many Missouri friends, including Joe and Jenny Williams, Irma Pratte, Irene Politte and Joan Turley. She was preceded in death by a brother: George W. Becker.
